If You Have Trouble Installing X(PLORE)

Some users have reported getting the message 'Configuring Windows(R) installer' while installing, followed by nothing. The installation fails. If you get this or any other error, you can manually install X(PLORE).

1. Create a folder for X(PLORE). Using Windows Explorer, open the folder C:Program Files and create a new folder XPLORE within this folder.
2. Download the file X(PLORE)_Files.zip, a compressed file that contains all the files you need to run X(PLORE). To download the file, click here (2.4MB, 3/27/02), and save the file in the folder you just created.
3. Use Windows Explorer to find the file X(PLORE)_Files.zip and unzip it. This will cause all the files compressed in X(PLORE)_Files.zip to be expanded and stored in the same directory. Windows Explorer will show all these files in the directory C:Program FilesXPLORE. You can delete the file X(PLORE)_Files.zip if you wish.
4. X(PLORE) uses an ActiveX component that you must register with the operating system. The component is tbc.ocx, and the program that registers it is regsvr.exe or regsvr32.exe. To registers your component, click on Start, then Run.. , then enter the following string into the box labeled with 'open:'

c:winntsystem32regsvr32.exe 'c:program filesxploretbc.ocx'

4. then click on 'OK'. You will have to adjust this entry to fit your computer. The quotation marks around the path to tbc.ocx are necessary. Any path name that includes a space must be placed in quotes.

With this manual installation, you won't get an icon on your desktop or Start Menu, but you can click on xplore.exe in the folder C:Program FilesXPLORE to run X(PLORE), and by right clicking and dragging the program to the desktop, you can create an icon there.
